You\u2019ve missed the best bit. Just a stone\u2019s throw from the centre lies one of Europe\u2019s best kitesurfing spots. Consistent wind, crystal-clear water, two bays with contrasting characteristics, and an international community that returns here every summer. This article explains where to go, how it works, which schools to choose, and shares some interesting facts that make this place special. Even if you\u2019ve never kitesurfed in your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"dove-si-fa-kitesurf-a-palau-lo-spot-e-uno-solo-ma-e-leggendario\"><span class=\"\">Where can you go kitesurfing in Palau? There\u2019s only one spot (but it\u2019s legendary)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">When it comes to\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">kitesurfing in Palau<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">, we are talking about a specific place:\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">Porto Pollo<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0(in Gallurese\u00a0<\/span><em><span class=\"\">Portu Puddu<\/span><\/em><span class=\"\">). It is situated halfway between Palau and Santa Teresa Gallura, about a ten-minute drive from the centre of Palau.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Porto Pollo isn\u2019t just any old beach. It\u2019s a\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">isthmus<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">, a narrow strip of sand connecting the mainland to the\u2019<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">Seagull Island<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0(or Isuledda, which in Gallurese literally means \u201clittle island\u201d). This means you\u2019re surrounded by water on both sides. And here\u2019s the first brilliant thing: the two bays are completely different.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"le-due-facce-di-porto-pollo-baia-ovest-e-baia-est\"><span class=\"\">The two sides of Porto Pollo: West Bay and East Bay<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Porto Pollo is divided into two bays separated by an isthmus just a few metres wide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"la-baia-ovest-il-regno-del-kitesurf\"><span class=\"\">The West Bay: the home of kitesurfing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">This is where it\u2019s done\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">kitesurfing<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">. It is on display at the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">Mistral<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">, the wind blowing from the north-west. The water is mostly flat or has a slight chop, perfect for learning and for freestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Why is it so perfect for kitesurfing?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The spot is sheltered from crosswinds (onshore\/side-shore), so you won\u2019t risk ending up out at sea<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The seabed is sandy and shallow for several metres; you can touch the bottom almost everywhere<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The water is crystal-clear and warm in summer<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Please note:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0In West Bay, there are strict rules. You usually sail in a clockwise direction, with designated areas for beginners (near the shore) and more experienced sailors (further out to sea). Following these rules isn\u2019t just a matter of courtesy: it\u2019s mandatory to avoid accidents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"la-baia-est-il-paradiso-del-windsurf-ma-anche-del-kite-con-levante\"><span class=\"\">The eastern bay: a windsurfing paradise (and also great for kitesurfing when the east wind blows)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The eastern bay has historically been home to the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">windsurfing<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">. It is more sheltered, with water as calm as a lake, and is exposed to the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"\">Levante<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0(easterly wind). So don\u2019t give up if it\u2019s calm in the morning: wait until one o\u2019clock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Fun fact:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0In Porto Pollo, the wind is so consistent that some professional kitesurfers move there for months at a time. I know people who have sold their homes in Germany to come and live in Palau. The reason? The protected area, the shallow water, the well-organised lessons. In 8\u201310 hours, you\u2019ll learn how to body drag and water start. You won\u2019t become an expert, but you\u2019ll come out of the water with the basics under your belt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Intermediate (you can do a water start and sail, but you\u2019re not consistent):<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0Porto Pollo is the perfect place to train. The calm water allows you to focus on your technique. The sidewind gives you confidence. Spend a couple of days here and you\u2019ll go home with much better control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Experts (you\u2019ve taken your first steps and want to improve):<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0An excellent spot for freestyle and jumps. The flat water is ideal for tricks. But be careful: the Mistral can get strong, exceeding 35 knots. On those days, only the locals go out with small kites (5\u20136 square metres).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Wave (do you want to surf the waves?):<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0Wrong spot. Porto Pollo has choppy water at best, not waves. For waves, you need to go elsewhere (e.g. Porto Ferro or the Costa dei Venti).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"sicurezza-regole-non-scritte-ma-importantissime-a-porto-pollo\"><span class=\"\">Safety: unwritten (but extremely important) rules in Porto Pollo<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">In Porto Pollo, there are unwritten rules that the locals enforce strictly. Breaking them means making yourself unpopular (and risking trouble).<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Sail clockwise around the western bay.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0It\u2019s simple: keep the shore on your left. Anyone sailing anti-clockwise is a public hazard.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Avoid walking upwind with the kite when covering long distances.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.petagus.it\/en\/knights-beach-cala-santa-maria-and-natural-pools-3-unmissable-stops-on-a-boat-trip-to-la-maddalena\/\">Walk along the beach<\/a>, don\u2019t fly.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Keep at least ten metres between yourself and another kiter.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0Crossing paths is the quickest way to get hurt.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">If you fall and lose your kite, call for help.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0Do not try to rescue them yourself if you are in difficulty. Lifeguards and instructors are trained to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Beginners: stay in the area close to the shore.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0The area further out to sea is for experienced swimmers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><strong><span class=\"\">Fun fact:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0I once saw a bloke sailing the wrong way round. After five minutes, a local instructor approached him and, in a very calm but firm tone, explained the rules to him. The bloke didn\u2019t make the same mistake again.
